“Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature.”-Saint Augustine
“Ethical philosophers intuit the deontological canons of morality by consulting the emotive centers of their own hypothalamic-limbic system. This is also true of the developmentalists, even when they are being their most severely objective. Only by interpreting the activity of the emotive centers as a biological adaptation can the meaning of the canons be deciphered.”
"We have strong feelings that tell us in clear and uncertain terms that some things simply cannot be done and that other things simply must be done. But it’s not obvious how to make sense of these feelings, and so we, with the help of some especially creative philosophers, make up a rationally appealing story [about rights]."
"However, such findings do not in the least diminish the importance of reason, nor do they blur the distinction between justified and unjustified belief. On the contrary, the inseparability of reason and emotion confirms that the validity of a belief cannot merely depend on the conviction felt by its adherents; it rests on the chains of evidence and argument that link it to reality. Feeling may be necessary to judge the truth, but it cannot be sufficient."(然而,這些發現絲毫不損及理性的重要性,也不會混淆有憑有據和無根據信念的差別。
"Damasio and his colleagues have observed that people who do not display the appropriate emotions before they decide, sometimes because of brain damage, also have an impaired ability to make good decisions. An inability to be guided by a "healthy fear" of bad consequences is a disastrous flaw."
"When I read that passage, ...I got so excited, I stood up on the hotel bed and started jumping... If I was right, the patients with VMPFC damage, the patients like Phineas Gage, would give utilitarian answers not just to the switch case, but to the footbridge case, too. Unfortunately, I didn't know anyone with VMPFC damage."
